For Loop BCN 2023, we’re excited to present Eden and Babylon, an audio-visual work produced by Australian artist Rob Garbutt as a spatial video installation at CasCaDas ArtSpace.

Eden and Babylon, a cycle of rain journeys, still and flowing, clear and indecipherable, an untranslatable surface like no earthly tongue flirting with the skin of meaning. Some call this turbulence: we call it quiet and peaceful. Here, sinuous waters, string together strong words that tell of love and separation; struggle to help us tune to the babble that we so easily dismiss.

Eden and Babylon 2023, is Rob Garbutt's single-channel audio-visual response, with accompanying text, to Eden Creek in north-eastern NSW, Australia. The work explores the limits of language (whether visual, sonic or written) to understand a land that is far from solid; a land in creation over eons, intimately understood by First Nations Bundjalung people through knowledge developed over millennia, and radically transformed by colonists from the United Kingdom during the last 180 years. A descendant of these colonists, Rob struggles to express a connection with the babbling fluidity of Eden Creek.

Edén y Babilonia, un ciclo de viajes delluvia, quieto y fluido, claro e indescifrable, una superficie intraducible como ninguna lengua terrenal que coquetea con la piel del significado. Algunos llaman a esto turbulencia: nosotros lo llamamos tranquilo y pacífico. Aquí, aguas sinuosas, ensartan fuertes palabras que hablan de amor y separación; luchar para ayudarnos a sintonizar con el balbuceo que tan fácilmente descartamos.

Eden and Babylon 2023 es la respuesta audiovisual de un solo canal de Rob Garbutt, con texto adjunto, a Eden Creek en el noreste de Nueva Gales del Sur (NSW), Australia. La obra explora los límites del lenguaje (ya sean visuales, sonoros o escritos) para comprender un terreno que dista mucho de ser sólido; una tierra en creación durante eones, íntimamente comprendida por la gente Bundjalung  de las First Nations a través del conocimiento desarrollado durante milenios, y radicalmente transformada por colonos del Reino Unido durante los últimos 180 años. Descendiente de estos colonos, Rob se esfuerza por expresar una conexión con la fluidez balbuceante de Eden Creek.

L'obra explora els límits del llenguatge (ja siguin visuals, sonors o escrits) per entendre una terra lluny de ser sòlida; una terra en creació al llarg d'eons, íntimament entesa pel poble Bundjalung de les Primeres Nacions a través del coneixement desenvolupat al llarg de mil·lennis i transformada radicalment pels colons del Regne Unit durant els darrers 180 anys. Descendent d'aquests colons, Rob lluita per expressar una connexió amb la fluïdesa balbuceant d'Eden Creek.
